“God takes care of the bookmaker,” legendary bookmaker Bob Martin once said.
The Almighty did more than that in Week 6. With the Cardinals upset of the Rams, the Titans upset of the Colts, the Texans upset of the Jaguars, the Browns upset of the Ravens, the Jets cover against the Rams, the Raiders cover against the Bills, and the Commanders cover against the 49ers, the bookies cleaned up.
And that Sunday came after the day after the Nos. 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7 teams lost in Saturday Pro Football (f/k/a College Football). Now, that is a good week.
Blake Grupe did not have a good week. In his first game since signing with the Rams, Grupe tore his ACL trying to blow up the Cardinals’ Devin Duvernay on a kickoff return. LA missed him in a shocking 18-16 loss.
Per coaching stats, clear NFC and AFC favorites have emerged. The 49ers and Chiefs ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in play design differential. They are the teams to beat barring a major injury. I particularly like San Francisco. DE Mykel Williams returned from a 2025 knee injury two weeks ago against Seattle and he was a serious problem against the Commanders. DC Raheem Morris can afford to be patient with DE Nick Bosa. If the 49ers have both Williams and Bosa healthy for the post-Thanksgiving and postseason push, I think this will be the year Kyle Shannahan finally lifts the Lombardi Trophy even if WR1 Mike Evans shuts it down at some point.
Better designed teams came into Week 6 playing almost .800 ball. I always expect them to win about 75 percent of all games. So, a correction seemed possible and it hit. Better designed teams dipped to 9-5 (.643) as the Broncos, Cardinals, Titans, Saints, and Bills lost the design battle but won the war.
