That old NFL saw, “On Any Given Sunday…,” proved itself once again. In Cleveland new QB Jameis Winston pumped some life into the listless Browns offense with 3 TD passed. Winston generated 8.81 points of player productivity, a 6-point increase over Cleveland’s most productive game with Deshaun Watson under center (2.81). The Browns’ defense caged the Ravens well enough, holding Lamar Jackson and his teammates, who had been infinitely productive in 4 of their prior 5 games (all wins), to just 2.81 in player productivity and 124 yards rushing.
In New England, according to @football perspective, the Jets became the first team since 1940 to lose when scoring 20 or more points, committing no turnovers, and holding their opponent under 250 total yards. Since 1940, teams checking those boxes were 756-0. New York kicker Greg Zuerlein missed a PAT, and the Jets failed to convert at 2-point PAT. Thanks to kicker Joe Slye and a successful 2-point PAT, the Patriots outscored New York 4-1 on extra points, which provided the margin of victory. I guess those points were not extra after all. They were more like necessary points. Without them the Jets incurred an extra loss.
Philadelphia pulled away from Cincinnati in the second half, 37-17. Since their bye in Week 5, the Eagles have gone 3 straight games without a turnover. Prior to the bye, they turned it over 8 times in 4 games. Their play design differential is now over +4% and DC Vic Fangio’s pass rush is heating up (-.704 yds/att).
Los Angeles rookie WR Ladd McConkey caught 2 TD passes from QB Justin Herbert in the Chargers 26-8 beat down of New Orleans. If Herbert has found a reliable target, the Bolts could be dangerous. Did you see McConkey? He looks like a little kid who found a grownup’s helmet. Nevertheless, if he can energize OC Greg Roman’s passing game and if someone, anyone can beat Kansas City (which did nothing impressive again except win), LA might not be out of the race in the AFC West.
