QC’s WK11 NFL Thoughts

Buffalo Bullies

Buffalo bullied Kansas City in every way in beating the formerly unbeaten Chiefs, 30-21. The Bills won the design battle, the player productivity battle, the turnover battle, the pass protection battle, the pass rush battle, the pass coverage battle, the rushing battle, and the penalty battle. The result was still in doubt late in Q4 until Buffalo QB Josh Allen ran for the clinching TD. Do not be fooled by KC’s competitiveness. The Bills were much the best.

NFL kickers have hit a rough patch. Two weeks ago, Atlanta’s Younghoe Koo and San Francisco’s Jake Moody both missed three. A miss (albeit from 58 yards) by Ka’imi Fairbairn, Houston’s money kicker, set up Detroit to finish a miracle comeback win in which the Lions committed five turnovers. Baltimore’s Justin Tucker entered the season as the most accurate kicker in NFL history, but on Sunday his two misses (while Steelers’ kicker Chris Boswell was six for six) contributed to the Ravens’ 18-16 loss to Pittsburgh. On Sunday night, Cincinnati’s Evan McPherson missed twice wide left to short-circuit the Bengals comeback in a 34-27 loss to the Chargers. Oy veh!

At the beginning of the season, I thought Tennessee might not win many games but might cover a lot on the strength of a sneaky good defense. Boy was I wrong! The Titans are 1-9 ATS. That is hard to do. It is almost impossible to do with middle-of-the pack play design differential (-0.56%) and player productivity (-0.15). The pass coverage has been very good (6.4 DQCYP) and the pass rush serviceable (-.509 yards/attempt) What has killed Tennessee has been turnovers (-11), penalties (-100 yards) and undesigned points from turnovers and special teams (-27). Even with all that, I kind of like the Titans this week at Houston.
